French Fabrics

Before leaving France I was desperate to find the perfect souvenir for the tailors. At first I thought I’d bring back the traditional hot chocolate bowls from Brittany. Then I thought: heavy, breakable, I need 10. Hmmmm.

Then I remembered my favorite Bretagne crockery designer, Sophie C. I first stumbled across Sophie C. four years ago in the small town of Pont l’Abbe. I had been looking for the traditional bowls, in a not so traditional color. It was unbelievable that there was literally ONE design for these bowls. What about people who have to have things different? So finally after stubbornly insisting on going in every single tourist shop, I found Sophie’s designs. Oh my——not only did she change the color of the bowl AND the pattern, she developed her own lovely Bretagne women characters! My kind of gal, the smart gallete that she is!

I was very disappointed to learn that we were hours away from the Sophie C. town but estatic to find her wares in another huge shop. Thrilled, I found these great tea towls which of course to the tailors are just nice pieces of fabric. I thought they could make pillow cases or something cute from them.

Bursting into the workshop gaily, I handed each one their package rattling on about my favorite designer in France. And then to my utter dismay realized they don’t know what or where France is!!
<br / Obviously the map is coming out. Plastered on the wall at that. It’s painstaking to think that they make clothing all day and that they’ve never even heard of France!! Absurd as a Frenchie would say.

However the next day Ging had made the cutest bag out of her tea towl!! I was so impressed because I’m constantly trying to initiate creativity amongst them. Of course half the time they think I’m crazy. But anyway, here’s to creative Sophie C. from France and creative Ging from Thailand. Maybe we should sell the bag to Sophie C.!!!! Wow—am I ever American! HA!

Cheers & Ciao for Now, Gina
